Rhoda’s mother is, as Rhoda puts it, “as buoyant as a lark on a summer’s morn.” Rhoda claims to be not as upbeat as her mother, but do you think that in some ways, she is? Given the seriousness of some of the issues explored in the memoir, did the humorous voice surprise you?

I guess it depends on how long ago these events took place. There is a certain kind of humor that retrospect brings.
P.S. Her mom was my favorite "character" in the book
I think Rhoda would like to be more like her mother, but she would never admit it. (well maybe she did admit it, but she only admitted it to us, not to herself.)
But, yes, I think she has some optimism about her.
I agree that she wants to be more like her mother. I also adored her Mom. I can't imagine that it's easy to raise four children and be married to Mennonite royalty :-)
As for the humorous voice, I guess I wasn't overly surprised. She did want to sell books. It couldn't be all gloom and doom.
